Huge financial pressures puts Limavady fire station under review

THE case for building a new fire station in Limavady in the next ten years will be reviewed in the face of huge financial pressure on the health and public safety budget.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey said he would have to look carefully at his entire capital programme in order to decide which projects get the funding green light.

DUP MLA George Robinson asked the Minister for an update on the provision of a new fire station in Limavady.

Mr McGimpsey replied: "I understand that Limavady Fire Station is on the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) priority list to be replaced over the next ten years.

"My Department is facing huge financial pressures in relation to both capital and revenue budgets.

"When the budget position becomes clearer, I will have to look closely at my entire capital programme, including the development of any new facilities, before deciding what projects will be delivered and the timeframe for completing these schemes."

In March this year the Acting Chief Fire Officer at the NIFRS wrote to East Londonderry MLA Gregory Campbell confirming a new Fire Station for Limavady was contained in the Fire Station Replacement Programme for the next 10-15 years.

He wrote: "A number of sites in the Limavady area are being explored in terms of site suitability. It is our intention to progress work towards the replacement of a Fire Station in Limavady within 2011-2014 period contingent upon funds being made available to progress the project."
