HUNT FOR MISSING MEDAL

THE police have been called in to investigate after a commemorative gold medal went missing from Newtownabbey Council's Mossley Mill headquarters after last Monday night's annual general meeting, it has been revealed.

The Times has learned that the 'Past Mayor's Medal', which was presented to councillor John Scott during the AGM, disappeared from the Mayor's Parlour after the meeting.

Councillor Scott said some members of his family, elected representatives and a few members of the public had gathered in the parlour for less than an hour after the AGM.

"It's a gold medal in a leather box about six inches long and I had it in my hand going into the parlour," he explained. "I set it down and forgot all about it until I got home. I phoned first thing on Tuesday morning and two members of staff checked and it wasn't there. I went up to the Mill and we turned the place upside down looking for it. We even went through the rubbish in case it had fallen into the bin, but it never turned up."

Councillor Vera McWilliam, the leader of the UUP group on the council, said that if someone has taken the medal they should hand it in before the police get involved.
