Hurdling the fences and high seas at Rotary

The event, organised by Rotarians Stanley McAloney, Trevor Monteith and Brenda Houston, attracted a crowd of eager punters and provided a great evening of fellowship and entertainment, said the club.

Rotary President Sam Crowe thanked the organisers, all those present for their support and Jack Creighton for the use of Ownies Bistro for the evening.

Meanwhile, Rotarians have enjoyed a talk about one an epic sailing adventure undertaken by two local residents.

Some years ago Bob Harper and his wife Christine, keen sailors, decided to sell their belongings and leave the safety of Belfast Lough for a trip round the world.

“Bob, guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Carrickfergus, used a large wall map to trace their route and sprinkled his talk with just some of the many anecdotes about their adventures, their magical experiences of encounters with wildlife, some of the wonderful people they met en route whose kindness to strangers was a reminder of the goodness in human nature,” said the club in a statement.

Rotarian John Turner in his vote of thanks commented that the magnitude of the enterprise undertaken by Bob and Christine was both inspirational and awe inspiring and he thanked Bob for sharing just a small fraction of their experiences with the club members.
