He said: “Details have been announced of an Active Awards for Sport scheme with potential awards ranging from £1000 to £10000 and aimed at grassroots community based sport.

“Many of our local sports clubs and community groups are based in areas of greatest need and these are the areas being prioritised by Sport NI.

“I would encourage local Sports Clubs, Charities, Parent Teacher Associations and Community/Voluntary Groups to at least make enquires about the scheme and examine if there is potential for these organisations to seek support for areas of their activities.

“Sport NI are hosting an information event on Wednesday night (17) at the Waterfoot Hotel, Londonderry from 6 to 7pm.

“However, if you are unable to get along to this information can be sought via the Sport NI website at www.sportni.net/funding/our-funding-programmes/active-awards-for-sport/ or contact your local District Council’s Sports Development Officer (for Strabane that is Aiden Lynch on 02871 382204).”

He concluded by adding: “I alert folk that applications to this fund close at 12noon on October 20. Quite often I hear groups and clubs complaining that they never get financial help for their activities - here is your opportunity and there is help available to assist you through the application process! ‘If you’re not in you can’t win!’”
