'˜I couldn't have asked for a better husband'

Garry, who was affectionately known as ‘Soupy’, was well regarded in local football circles.

He passed away on September 8 after being admitted to hospital on August 22 with a massive brain haemorrhage from which he never recovered.

Debbie said: “I’d like to thank my family and friends for everything they’ve done for me. They have been a great support over the last few weeks. I’d also like to thank Rev Dickinson and the team at Carnmoney Presbyterian Church who have offered so much support. I really couldn’t have asked for a better husband. He was a true gentleman, generous and compassionate. There were no grey areas with Garry. When I met him in 2002 it was love at first sight for me.”

Debbie has found some comfort in knowing that Garry’s passing has benefitted another person as his right eye has been donated.

Garry was manager of Mossley FC when he passed away. Debbie wishes to thank the team and everyone connected with the club, who have kindly paid for his headstone. She said: “Garry thought so highly of everyone at the club. We didn’t have any children of our own, but Garry was like a father figure to many of the players he coached.

“I have been invited to their match against Newcastle tomorrow. This will be my first ever time at one of their matches. The club plan to hold a minute’s silence before kick-off, as it will be their first home game since Garry’s passing.”

Debbie would also like to thank the nurses at the Royal Victoria Hospital. She added: “They were fantastic with Garry and very supportive to me.”
