'I would rather go to Outer Mongolia'

INDEPENDENT councillor Randal McDonnell from Cushendun has said he would rather go to 'Outer Mongolia' than a town in County Tipperary with which Moyle Council has links.

Each year representatives from Nenagh attend the Lammas Fair and Nenagh representatives have spoken to a Moyle councillor about a reciprocal visit.

Ulster Unionist councillor Willie Graham said he was approached by members of the Nenagh delegation at the Lammas Fair Dinner in Ballycastle who asked about a visit from Moyle to Nenagh before Christmas.

Cllr Padraig McShane (Independent) said similar requests have been made several times and the requests have not materalised.

Cllr Graham said there were two or three similar requests and Council Chief Executive Richard Lewis said he has spoken to Nenagh Council about the matter and said there has to be a formal request from the Council.

On previous occasions, he said, it was left with Nenagh Council to come back to Moyle.

Council Chairperson, Price McConaghy (Independent), felt spring would be a better time for a visit to Nenagh.

Independent councillor Seamus Blaney said they need to follow-up the latest request and go in either winter or summer.

SDLP councillor Madeline Black said: “We can’t go inviting ourselves” and Cllr Oliver McMullan (Sinn Fein) said Moyle Council had written at least twice to County Tipperary but there was “no response”.

Mr Lewis said although “the ball is in their court” he said he will contact Nenagh Council.

Cllr McShane asked Cllr McDonnell if he would go on a trip to Nenagh and Cllr McDonnell replied: “What would anybody want to go to Nenagh for? I would rather go to Outer Mongolia”.
