Ice cream van IS allowed beside play park

AN ice cream van IS allowed to trade close to the play park at the Quay Road in Ballycastle, it has emerged.

In March some councillors felt the tender meant the ice-cream van was not allowed up beside the park and officials said they would check the situation.

In March some councillors felt the location of the ice cream van was unfair to a nearby sweet shop and this was duly reported upon in the press.

But now there has been clarification on the issue.

Moyle Council’s minutes said: ‘Further to previous articles appearing in the press regarding the above, the Chairperson of Council and Officers have met with ... (the ice cream van owner)... regarding content of same.

‘It has been confirmed that the designated area for trading was adjacent to the play park.

‘Council should be aware that the Trading Concessions were subject to Public Auction, agreements were signed on the day of auction and the monies paid to Council also. All areas subject to Trading Concession were the same as the previous year, and this was made clear at the auction.

‘Council therefore should proceed with the Trading Concessions, as agreed at the auction. Any changes to designated areas for the 2011 season can be agreed prior to next year’s auction,’ said the Council minutes.
