Iconic statue vandalised

ONE of Londonderry's most iconic Protestant landmarks has been heavily vandalised in an overnight attack.

The statue of Rev George Walker, at the grounds of the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall in Society Street, was forcefully hit in the attack resulting in severe damage.

The attack comes a week before the beginning of the Maiden City Festival, a week long event culminating in the annual Relief of Derry Parade by the Apprentice Boys. In recent years the Festival has become a large tourist attraction bringing in thousands of people from across the world, who attend the museum in the Apprentice Boys Memorial to here the tale of the Siege.

The Maiden City Festival has also received funding from the Irish Government and organisers have strongly emphasised that the nature of the event is one of a shared history within Londonderry.
