ILEX chair to stand down in early 2012due to age

LONDONDERRY regeneration firm ILEX has announced that the Chair of its Board, Sir Roy McNulty, intends to step down from that post in the first quarter of 2012.

Sir Roy said: “It has been a privilege and a pleasure for me to serve as Chair of ILEX since 2007, but I will be 75 next year and the time has come when I need to reduce my workload substantially.

“I have appreciated the help and support which I have received from many people and organisations during the past four years.

“The regeneration effort in Derry~Londonderry has begun to make real progress in that time and the City has major opportunities for the future. I have no doubt that a new Chair can provide the sustained focus on implementation which will be required for lasting success.”

Sir Roy has worked on key projects such as the ILEX Regeneration Plan and the Peace Bridge but raised eyebrows when he received a total of £104,677 in salary and employer National Insurance Contributions (NIC) whilst claiming £23,470 in expenses in 2008/9.

A recent review of ILEX envisaged the firm being wound down by 2016 and hoped the “end game” in terms of delivery of key projects was in sight.

The 94-page report - compiled by consultants BDO on behalf of Ilex’s sponsor departments, the Department of Social Development (DSD) and the Office of First and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) - suggested a further review take place in 2014 with the possible inclusion of a “sunset clause” earmarking 2016 as the year to wind it down.
