Illegal dumping condemned

ILLEGAL dumping in green areas has been slammed by Lurgan councillors.

Sinn Fein’s Noel McGeown called on those responsible for the discarding of household objects in the green area between Lurgantarry and Kilwilkie to stop.

Mr McGeown welcomed the clean up of the area carried out by the Housing Executive this week.

He said: “I contacted the Housing Executive on behalf of local residents to have this area cleaned and on behalf of the residents I will be writing to them to thank them for the work they have done.”

The councillor explained that there had been a consistent problem with the dumping of household objects in the area and as a result, the grass cutters were unable to keep the green tidy.

He said: “A very small number of residents are to blame for the littering and the resultant unsightly condition of this open space, Now that the area is cleaned I would call on these people to ensure it stays that way. This green area is a facility for the community and in particular the children of the area and should be kept clean and safe.”

Chair of Craigavon Council’s Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Johnny McGibbon said: “There is no excuse for indiscriminate dumping of household waste. As well as the normal bin collection service, council has an amenity facility at the end of the New Line road opposite Taghnevan Playing Fields and another at Fair Green in Portadown.

“If an item of household furniture is too large to bring to the amenity facility there is a bulky items collection service available through the Environmental Services Department of Council. Environmental Services will make one free collection within a each twelve month period and will do additional collections at a charge of 11.20 per item.”
