Illegal dumping poses flooding risk

DUMPING rubbish in rivers could lead to flooding, the Rivers Agency is warning.

Following a period of heavy rain, operations director Philip Mehaffey has stressed the importance of keeping waterways clear of obstruction.

“Dumping material in or near a river can easily lead to blockages and subsequent flooding. Hedge and tree cuttings are major culprits which wash down and block the grilles. Larger items of furniture should also be disposed of properly - many councils operate a free collection service for disposing bigger items,” he said.

People can also help reduce the risk of damage to their own property by clearing out gullies and guttering which will enable water to flow freely into sewers and rivers. Now is a good time to ensure that your house insurance has been renewed and covers your property from flood water damage.”

Information on preparing for or responding to a flood can be found at www.nidirect.gov.uk/flooding. Any flooding should be reported using the flooding incident line - 0300 2000 100.
