Imaginative fundraisinginitiative for cancer charity

EGLINTON farmer Alan Hunter and Doreen Fleming of Fleming-Agri Products have come up with a novel way of raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer care.

“I try to take on a challenge every year for Marie Curie. This year we aim to complete a 250 mile cycle across the Jordanian desert from the capital Amman to the ancient city of Petra,“ explained Doreen. “The training is difficult enough but raising the required minimum funds of 6000 can be even more challenging!”

Alan, who runs a firewood business at Longfield, came up with the idea of loading one of Fleming’s trailers with logs. Those visiting the Fleming stand at Balmoral show this week will have the opportunity to guess how many logs are on the trailer with a chance to win a cash prize. Established 150 years ago and still a family firm based at Newbuildings, Fleming Agri- Products is clearly delighted to help support Marie Curie Cancer Care.

“Every family in this land is touched by cancer at some stage. The Marie Curie nurses do a wonderful job in palliative care towards the end of a terminally ill patient’s life,” remarked George Fleming. “I’m just glad I don’t have to sit on a bike for five days in the intense heat – I’ll leave that to my wife Doreen and our friend ‘Big Al’!”
