'Important' arts project launched

BUDDING artists are being asked to get involved in the development of public art works in Lurgan.

Sculptor and creative artist Maurice Harron, who developed the ‘Let the Dance Begin’ sculpture in Strabane, has been commissioned by the council to design and create two for Lurgan and Portadown.

The aim of the project is to develop artworks which represent and incorporate the ideas and views of local residents and embody the distinct character and identity of the towns.

During February Maurice will be hosting a number of interactive workshops to introduce the project to local residents and meet individuals who would like to participate.

Chair of the Development Committee, Alderman Sydney Anderson said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for residents throughout the borough to help develop a key landmark in both towns which will be enjoyed and celebrated for years to come. I would urge all residents throughout the area to get creative and get involved in this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Chair of the Leisure Services Committee, Councillor Mary McAlinden, said: “The development of public art will help to enhance Lurgan and Portadown’s vibrant environment, making the borough a more beautiful place to shop, work and relax. It is very important to us that the people who will benefit from the public art have the opportunity to incorporate their ideas and help shape the dynamic creations.”
