Speaking after a visit to the site, the Larne Lough representative said he was glad to see efforts being made to tackle the eyesore.

“I am glad to see that soil has finally been delivered and that the diggers are onsite,” he added.

“This roundabout is one of the first things people see when they enter Larne. There are many tourists who pass the site every year to use the Port of Larne, especially with the forthcoming Giro d’Italia.

“A few weeks ago I was part of an Ulster Unionist delegation which visited the A8 roadworks and we raised the issue with the contractors.

“I understand the site will be completed this week with hydro-seeding, which should see some growth in time for the arrival of the Giro.

“Council’s longer-term plan is to landscape the area and to decorate it with flowers, shrubs and possibly some solid structures.”
