Firemen searched desperately for missing children after fire engulfed a house at Woodcroft Brae, Ballymena, earlier this evening.

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service Regional Control Centre received a report of a house on fire at just before 6:40pm.

Two fire engines were dispatched from Ballymena Fire Station and on arrival gathered information that there may be people inside the 3 storey detached house which had a well developed fire on the ground floor.

The Fire Officer in charge ordered an attack on the fire with two water jets and committed breathing apparatus wearers to the house.

One of the breathing apparatus teams found and rescued a woman from the burning house.

She has been taken to Antrim Area Hospital. We have no information relating to her condition at this time.

The breathing apparatus teams continued to search as it was believed children may have been present in the house. Thankfully they were elsewhere during the fire.

“29 firefighters from Ballymena, Antrim and Kilrea, 2 Officers, 4 fire engines and a command vehicle attended the scene. 8 breathing apparatus sets and two water jets were required to bring the fire under control and extinguish it. The cause of the fire is under investigation. We wish the lady a speedy recovery,” saidArchie McKay, Group Commander
