Incident ‘stupid and fuelled by drink’

A Lurgan man who shouted sectarian abuse in an incident ‘fuelled by drink’ was fined £125 last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for disorderly behaviour on January 25 this year.

Nineteen-year-old Philip McCready, Rutherford Park, Lurgan, was also fined £125 for obstructing a police officer and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that at 1.15am a police patrol in Church Place, Lurgan, heard the defendant shouting sectarian abuse.

A solicitor for McCready said he had alcohol on board and would claim that after ordering food in a takeaway he had been assaulted by a young lady who threw a slice of pizza in his face.

He added that McCready took umbrage at this and made these comments to her.

District Judge, Mr Peter King, said that regardless of the provocation the defendant’s reaction was entirely inappropriate.

He added that the matter was ‘stupid and fuelled by drink’.
