Industrial action likely to disrupt council services

Lisburn City Council is advising its customers that there may be disruption to its services, across facilities, due to proposed national industrial action on Thursday July 10.

Bin collections for residual bins (blue/black) scheduled for Thursday July 10 will now be collected on Friday July 11. Collections for both the brown and green recycling bins on Thursday July 10 have been cancelled as have brown bin collections on Friday July 11. Any homeowner impacted by the cancellation, urgently needing a brown or green bin collection should contact the Central Services Depot on Tel 028 9267 3417 to arrange an emergency collection.

It is anticipated that the Council’s Amenity Sites will remain open during the industrial action as will the Council’s Registration Service for births, deaths and marriages. However cemetery services will be suspended.

Customers, wishing to use the Council’s leisure facilities are advised to phone the facility first to ensure services remain operational. All other Council Services will be provided as far as is practical. Customers are advised of the following helpline numbers.

A spokesperson for the Unite union said: “Although we recognise that the planned strike action on July 10 will inconvenience service users, we believe that members of the public understand the need for all workers to be paid a decent wage – a Living Wage. Unite is aware of the particular concerns existing around the likelihood that cemetery workers will be included in the strike action, and we will do our utmost to minimise the impact on families at a traumatic time.

“Unite officials are seeking to work with local council management teams to ensure that any disruption to this service is managed in a way that minimises impact on families.”

Lisburn City Council will provide up-to-date information on their website at www.lisburncity.gov.uk.
