THE lease on the North West Regional College (NWRC) units at Northside Village expired last month but has been extended for a further year with Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey saying no decision has been made to close the facility.

Fears had been raised that NWRC management were considering closing the college’s outreach centre at the Northside Village Centre in Shantallow.

But Sir Reg - responding to a question by Sinn Fin MLA Raymond McCartney - said NWRC has not made a decision to close the facility.

He stated: “NWRC has advised that it rents 1100 square metres of classroom accommodation in a retail commercial centre in Shantallow.

“It provides a range of classroom and computer laboratories offering outreach provision. The lease on the premises expired in September 2010 and has been extended for one year.

“The retention of the facility is reviewed annually based on enrolments. No decision has been made by the college to close the facility.”
