WITH spectacular street theatre, top class music, storytelling and interactive workshops the city's historic walls will come alive this summer with the "All the Wall's A Stage."

Running from July 1 - August 30, 2010, the programme will feature a vast array of wonderful and exciting events.

Launched last week by the Mayor Councillor Colum Eastwood, the programme features an eclectic mix of music, dance, exhibitions and street performance which is sure to enrich the city’s tourism experience over the months of July and August.

Organised by Derry City Council’s Development Department, the Mayor encouraged both locals and visitors alike to check out the programme.

“The ‘All the Walls A Stage’ programme is sure to create a vibrant atmosphere within and around the historic city walls this summer. It is particularly good to note that all of the events are free, making the programme accessible to everyone and it provides a great opportunity for both visitors and locals alike to experience the city at its very best.

“I would like to congratulate all parties involved in organising a wonderful programme of events and would also like to acknowledge funders for their invaluable contribution.”

Mary Blake, Council’s Tourism Development officer said: “We were keen to develop a programme which would showcase the city at its very best.

“All the Wall’s A Stage is essentially an animation programme that has been devised to bring our city’s historic monument to life. By offering such a diverse programme of events we have been able to create a programme which is pleasing to everyone; that will hopefully create a wonderful vibe within the city centre this summer.”

All the Wall’s A Stage will incorporate 60 days of animation within the City Walls from July 1 - August 29, 2010.

The animation programme will introduce a variety of new historical characters to the walls this summer including Walter De Burgh, Brother Aidan - a Columban Monk and a departing emigrant.

Visitors will also be able to step back in time to interact with the Georgian Soap opera characters to discover the gossip of the day. Street Theatre will bring the city to life and will include Tribal Fire performance, dance demonstrations, multi ethnic drumming, stilt walkers and pyromancers.

Musical performance will appeal to all tastes from opera to rock, and classical to folk. Finally outdoor light projections will light up the city walls creating a atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.

For further programme details check out the Culture in the City programme to be launched later this month. The Culture in the City programme, which will also incorporate this year’s Walled City Cultural Trail, is set to provide both locals and visitors alike with a comprehensive what’s on guide to events taking place in the City over the summer.

This project has been part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland and administrated by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Derry City Council’s Development Department.
