Inspections plan for local stables

COUNCIL officers and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) vets will carry out joint inspections at three horse riding establishments in Londonderry this year.

An officer from the Council's health and safety team attended training during May on health and safety in horse riding establishments.

A report to the Derry City Council Environmental Services Committee notes that such inspections are necessary as horse riding is the second most dangerous sport in the UK with between 15 and 20 deaths each year.

The three local stables are registered with DARD and will be subject to joint inspections throughout the year.

A report to the committee advised: "The training was provided by DARD vets and highlighted the safety and welfare issues at such establishments.

"Horse riding is regarded as the 2nd most hazardous sporting and leisure activity in the UK with 15-20 fatalities annually. Air sports are regarded as the most hazardous sporting activity and motor sports to be the 3rd most hazardous.

"Joint inspections of these facilities within the Council area will be carried out this year with the assistance of the DARD vets."
