International Martial Arts instructor returns home

TEACHING Martial Arts abroad is no new experience for Coleraine man Jeffrey Balmer.

He has been teaching across the world for over 30 years and has had some of the best known British and European Budo people as his students from Master Chang of Chang Ti chi to the United States Karat and Korean Kenpo heads.

Now Jeffrey has just returned from a world tour where he lectured and taught in countries including Sweden, Austria, Japan, Norway and even Lapland.

Jeffrey’s talents have been sought more and more by police forces, private security firms and armies across the world but now in retirement he only passes on certain aspects of his skills to the minor avenue of Martial Arts and Ways (Budo) such as Karate, Kungfu, Jujitsu and many others too numerous to list.

As well as his lecturing and teaching tour, Jeffrey also visits numerous students from around the globe who come to Ballymoney and Coleraine each year to train under perhaps one of the world’s greatest military arts instructors.

Early this year the Japanese Cultural Centre, off John Street in Ballymoney, where Jeffrey trains, pulled off a major coup when Otake Sensei of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu Bujutsu came out of Japan for the first time since 1980 to teach in Coleraine and Ballymoney.

This was his first ever visit to the British Isles and Ireland with only one visit to Switzerland in 1980.
