International Peace Day event on Friday

The publication is a compilation of writing by diverse contributors ranging from community workers, peace activists, war resisters, academics, ex military and a Nobel Peace prize winner.

Each of the fifteen writers gives a personal account of their life and experience of nonviolence and what it means to them. The project was co-ordinated by INNATE (Irish Network for Nonviolent Action Training & Education) The publication will be mainly available on-line and a limited number of hard copies will also be printed.

Portstewart writer, Attracta Walsh, is one of the contributors.

She said: “I was very pleased to be invited to contribute to this booklet. I grew up in Armagh and from my early teens onwards I have seen and felt the effects of violence on individuals and the community.

“For me the written word is a means of exploring and seeking to make sense of my experiences and hopefully communicating something of interest to the reader. INNATE is an excellent network which organises seminars, training events and offers solidarity and support to peace activists locally and further afield.”

The launch event takes place in Coleraine Town Hall, The Diamond this Friday at 7pm. The guest speaker is Mairead Maguire (pictured, and songs will be provided by peace activist, Tony Kempster.

The evening includes a guided tour of the exhibition, Stitching and Unstitching the Troubles, a North East PEACE III Cultural Fusions exhibition, curated by Roberta Bacic assisted by Breege Doherty with Causeway Museum Service and Mid-Antrim Museums Service.
