International Women's Day

TO mark International Women's Day 2010 a multi-venue art exhibition and workshop programme entitled 'Women Building Bridges' will open in four cultural venues in Londonderry on Monday, March 8.

The Exhibition showcases individual women’s art pieces and collective creativity, and demonstrates women’s willingness to engage in community bridge building in the City and beyond.

The exhibition will be hosted by Eden Place Arts Centre, the Tower Museum, the Women’s Centre and Verbal Arts Centre and will run until Saturday, March 27, featuring four exhibition launches.

The theme of this year’s event echoes the new pedestrian Peace Bridge across the Foyle River reflecting the more globalised world of today, contrasting with the historical roots of International Women’s Day.

The aim of the day is to highlight the social realities and rights of women and the programme of activities will include discussion forums and reflective spaces, promising interesting dialogue reflecting women’s perspectives on many contemporary issues. Topics will include a Women and the Sex Industry Workshop at The Junction on Wednesday, March 10; the screening of ‘Trade’ in The Nerve Centre Monday, March 8, which focuses on a local and global dimensions to sex trafficking; while ‘Exhibiting Women’s Art’ focuses in on the profile of and issues around women exhibiting in cultural venues.

Also on the schedule is ‘28 Days’ in Void on Thursday, March 11, which is an artistic response by a number of women writers and artists to the Ebrington regeneration site, and ‘Community Bridge Building’ in Waterside Theatre on Friday, March 12, which will be an opportunity to explore how space maybe be used and regeneration initiatives may contribute to positive human interaction and sustainable relationships.

A ‘Her-story’ city tour based on research undertaken by the filmmaker Anne Crilly, which illuminates some lesser known facts and stories pertaining to women’s daily lives within the city will also be piloted.

Social events being put together to complete the programme includes a Femme Fatale Open Mic Nite in Sandino’s on Monday, March 8, which will showcase women songwriters and performers in the north west. This event is being organised by Tina McLaughlin and proceeds are in aid of Foyle Women’s Aid.
