Investigating officer called in murder case

A DISTRICT Judge has directed that an officer investigating the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll should attend Craigavon Magistrates Court and update the court on the case.

District Judge Alan White told a Crown lawyer at Friday’s sitting that he wants an officer investigating the case to attend in a week’s time.

Mr White said he had previously asked that this should be done, but was told on Friday that no officer was in attendance.

Counsel representing Lurgan man Brendan McConville (29), who is charged with the murder of Constable Carroll on March 9 last, had expressed disappointment that no officer involved in the case was present to brief them on what was happening.

District Judge White said he had asked at a previous hearing that this should happen. “I want an officer to be present, and also given an explanation as to why he is not here this morning,” he said.

The case was adjourned for a week, and McConville, of Glenholme Avenue, Lurgan, who appeared by video link, was remanded in custody.

A second man was also remanded for a week, charged with Constable Carroll’s murder. The man, who was a juvenile at the time he was alleged to have committed the murder, also appeared via video link.

He was also remanded in custody until Friday’s court.
