Investigation follows River Lagan oil spill

AN investigation is being carried out after the River Lagan was contaminated with oil.

Following a report of oil in the river at Union Bridge/ Lisburn Council Offices, a Northern Ireland Enviroment Agency (NIEA) Water Quality Inspector was tasked to the area to carry out an investigation last week.

A spokespeson for the NIEA commented: "The Inspector confirmed that the watercourse was contaminated with oil and the source was identified. Statutory Samples were lifted with a view to prosecution. NIEA Water Quality Inspectors deployed oil booms to contain the oil and the polluter has employed a 'clean-up ' company.

"NIEA Water Quality Inspectors will continue to monitor the situation and will keep the watercourse under observation."

Councillor Jenny Palmer voiced her concerns: "The source was apparently found to be a local business in Lisburn and the oil seeped into the river at Edge Water. NIEA are investigating the breach and were quick to react "

She continued: "The river was and is so badly polluted that it resembles the colours of the rainbow and the smell is really quite noxious. Although the clean up is underway and booms were set up across the river to stop the oil travelling farther downstream a considerable amount was already in the river. I am so annoyed that once again the river's ecosystem and wildlife are put at risk. If we are ever to improve the quality of our waterways I would urge NIEA to pursue those responsible for the full cost of the spill and to make an example of them. Lisburn City Council with the support of the Heritage Lottery are to carry out a major project along the river from Hugenoet to Hilden which will enhance the natural beauty of the area and we cannot afford any more spillages along those waterways."
