IRA splinter groups will never have people’s support

A LONDONDERRY trade unionist has told the violent republicans responsible for the murder of 25-year-old Omagh policeman Ronan Kerr that their actions have not advanced their professed cause one iota and that they will never garner the support of ordinary working men and women.

Liam Gallagher of Londonderry Trade Unions Council called on the dissidents to stop their actions before there is another Omagh bomb-type tragedy.

He said their actions were anti-democratic and flew in the face of the will of the people of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

He commented: “Derry Trade Unions Council and all of the trade union organisations in the city totally condemn the brutal murder of the young PSNI office in Omagh and extends sincerest sympathy to the mother, brothers and sister of the victim Ronan.

“Even though these dissident groups disregard condemnation we have to continually make it known to them that the vast majority of people north and south do not support their actions and this has been tested over the past number of years at the ballot box.

“They would need to go away and seriously analyse how the disruption that they have caused in Derry during the past week and the murder in Omagh have advanced the idea of self-determination and Irish unity one iota.

“The clear message that we are sending out as trade unions representing ordinary men and women in the workplace is that this organisation will never get the support of ordinary people and that they should now stop their actions before there is another Omagh style tragedy.”
