Irivine to set wheels in motion for Action Cancer

ON Friday 1 and Saturday 2 October Ballycastle man Irvine Kane and up to five other friends will get in on the action for local charity Action Cancer.

This is the first time Irvine and his fellow cyclists will have cycled the 100 mile route from Derry to Larne– it will be a great challenge for all of them.

The cyclists plan to depart from Donnelly & Taggert's yard Campsie, Derry at approx 10am on the Friday and make their way along the coastal road to Ballycastle, in the first leg of their journey.

The guys will be collecting in the local towns as they pass through including Coleraine, Castlerock, Portstewart, Portrush and Ballintoy before they spend the night back at home in Ballycastle.

After some much needed rest the guys will then head off from The Diamond, Ballycastle at 10am on Saturday and will ride the 50 or so miles to Larne.

Again stops will be made at Limavady, Benone and Magilligan along the route to drum up as much support and collect as much sponsorship as possible.

Irvine said: "I decided that I would like to do something to support a local cancer charity as unfortunately so many members of my family have been affected by this terrible disease.

"I just wanted to do something that would be a challenge to me and the others whilst raising money for a local charity at the same time.

"I am hoping to give something back by taking on this tough cycle. Action Cancer offer some great services for those undergoing treatment for different cancers including complementary therapies and counselling."

Lucy McCusker PR & Events Officer at Action Cancer said: "I am delighted to be able to support Irvine and the others in any way possible with this cycle.

"He is doing a really wonderful thing in cycling nearly 100 miles and raising money for Northern Ireland's leading cancer charity at the same time, it is a very good way of raising awareness in his local area too.

"I am wishing him all the best with the challenge and would like to thank him for all the planning and hard work that has gone in to date. Let's hope the weather stays kind to the cyclists along their journey!"

If anyone is reading this and feels they too would like to get involved – either in taking part in the cycle, (anyone at all can do even a small distance to show support), or by helping to collect at some of the towns along the route, then please get in touch with Lucy at Action Cancer on 9080 3379.

Action Cancer is committed to saving lives and supporting people with cancer in our community—so PLEASE donate as much as you can to help Action Cancer continue this fight, to save lives and help people living with cancer in Northern Ireland. All sponsorship raised will be spent on our lifesaving services and research, here in Northern Ireland.

Every year 3.2 million must be raised to fund Action Cancer's services which include early detection clinics for men and women, a mobile screening unit – the 'Big Bus', health promotion for workplaces, community groups and schools, campaigning, grants for local research projects, counselling and complementary therapy for people living with cancer and their families. Therefore, your active support and fundraising skills are both much needed and appreciated!
