It takes two to tandem

LISBURN in Focus, in partnership with Maryland Wheelers, is running a unique tandem cycling event on Saturday June 16, starting at the Down Royal Racecourse.

‘It Takes Two to Tandem’ is suitable for all tandem pairs, though specially designed to allow blind and partially sighted people the chance to experience tandem cycling. The Lisburn in Focus project is supported by the Big Lottery Fund and led by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB NI) in partnership with Guide Dogs, Lisburn City Council and Lisburn City Centre Management.

This innovative sporting event is just one of the ways the dedicated project team are making the Lisburn City Council area inclusive for people with sight loss.

‘It takes two to Tandem’ is a wonderful opportunity for blind and partially sighted people to try riding a tandem for the first time, or, for more experienced cyclists, to go for a longer ride through the countryside. It’s also a great chance for local cycling enthusiasts to try their hand at volunteering for a good cause, while keeping fit and learning a new skill.

Partially sighted Jim Moore, a local resident said, “I’ve been out cycling every week with the Lisburn in Focus Tandem Group that meets in Wallace Park on a Thursday night, and am aiming for the 42 mile route now. I also go out between group sessions with volunteer pilot Chris Grant and am really building up my fitness. It’s great to feel the speed of the bike and get some good vigorous exercise.”

There are three routes available on the day; 2 miles, 10 miles or 42 miles. Entrance to the event is free and there will be a complimentary lunch for all participants afterwards.

Registration is essential, please call Lisburn in Focus on 028 9260 0388 or e-mail [email protected]. You can also visit www.rnib.org.uk/lisburninfocus
