It's not good to talk

HUNDREDS of prisoners have been chatting away on contraband mobile phones in HMP Magilligan over the past five years in defiance of Northern Ireland Prison Service rules.

Far more contraband mobile phones were taken from prisoners in Magilligan jail over the past five years than from the inmates of other prisons in Northern Ireland.

A total of 174 mobile phones were taken from prisoners in the jail between 2005 and 2009 with the last three years marked by a sharp increase in the number of devices recovered.

In 2006 just six mobiles were seized but this rose to 40 in 2007, to 74 in 2008, before falling back to 37 in 2009. But the number was greater than 130 seized from prisoners in Maghaberry and just 17 seized from prisoners in Hydebank over the same period.
