'˜I've learned a whole lot about WW1'

The two young actors playing the young Irish soldiers in The Playhouse's workshop production marking the decade of anniversaries, '˜Voices from the Void' have learned a lot.

Developed by writer Felicity McCall from her Big Lottery Award winning ‘We Were Brothers’, which told how soldiers from Ulster and Irish Regiments forged friendships as they fought side by side in the Trenches for the first time, ‘Voices from the Void’ draws on archive material to tell the story of life at the Front.

The free workshop production will take place in The Playhouse on Monday, June 6 at 11am and 8pm.

After a century of historical, strategic and political analysis, McCall feels it is these words which have poignant resonance for today’s audiences. And that poignancy is heightened when performed by actors still in their teens.

The actors, Reece Cullen and Eibhin O’Mianain, will, through dramatic monologues, letters, and poetry, speak directly to audiences which at the matinee performances in particular will include their contemporaries- young men and women who some three generations ago would have been living the tragedy that was WW1.

It’s another important milestone in bringing this important decade of centenaries to life for everyone in the city.

Both are A Level drama students and veterans of MorePies’ ‘Hospital Food,’ a National Theatre collaboration; Shakespeare for Schools; they’ve toured with Tinderbox and appeared in the Playhouse film, Grey Skies.

The performance which is directed by Steve Wakeley will be followed by a Q and A/ discussion on why and how best we remember; the lessons of 1914-18 and the legacy for the generations of the next 100 years.
