Jack Glenn: Foyle will put £20k to Parkinson’s studies

Tireless local campaigner Jack Glenn says the local branch of the Parkinson’s UK charity has raised £20,000 for research this year.

Mr Glenn, Chair of the Foyle Branch of the charity, said the donation will be invested towards its mission of finding a cure and improving life for everyone affected.

“We’re very pleased to have raised the £20,000, it’s a good sum. We’ve decided this year to put the money towards research and that will be handed over now around December.”

Amongst the highly successful fundraising events the local branch organised this year was a recent charity abseil.

Mr Glenn and his committee members were delighted to accept the cheque presented by Liam, with a few of those who took part including the Rt Rev Bishop Ken Good, Rev. Mark Shaw from Strabane and Councillor Maurice Devenney.

The prelate, the pastor and the politician all went perpendicular on the new climbing wall in the Foyle Arena.

Mr Devenney said: “I was more than happy to take part in this fundraiser for what’s a very worthwhile cause and I’d pay tribute to Jack and Liam and all the organisers who put in so much of their own time and effort for the charity.”

One person in every 500 people has Parkinson’s.

That’s about 127,000 people in the UK.

Symptoms and how quickly they progress are different for everyone. There’s currently no cure, but drugs and treatments are available to manage many of the symptoms. The charity’s research division invested over £70million in groundbreaking Parkinson’s research.

“We’re leading the way to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected. With your support, we’ll overcome the symptoms and find a cure,” it states.
