Jail term for Ardmorewoman’s 999 hoaxes

Sheree Elizabeth Ann Murphy, whose address was given as Ardmore Road, was jailed for one month.

The 26-year-old admitted improper use of public communications on February 23.

Londonderry Magistrate’s Court heard Murphy made six emergency calls making allegations of assault.

She initially claimed she had assaulted someone, then she said she had been assaulted herself. When police arrived at her home she began ‘laughing and smiling’ and denied making the calls.

However, her mobile phone was checked and it was confirmed the calls had been made by Murphy.

Police warned her about misuse of the emergency 999 system and left.

A short time later, Murphy made further calls and claimed she had been assaulted.

Police attended her home a second time .The phone was in Murphy’s hand and she was ‘laughing’.

During police interview, the 26-year-old said she was ‘disgusted and embarrassed by her behaviour’.

Murphy told the officers what she had done was a ‘disgrace’ and apologised.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court his client was currently serving a prison sentence and was due for release in October.

He urged the court not to interfere with her release date. The one month jail term imposed yesterday will run concurrently.
