Jailed for a year after he '˜floored' clubber in front of his mother

One of Paulius Simanskis’ victims, an 18-year-old, was rendered unconscious during the attack as his mother watched on.

The court heard how Simanskis, 26, from Lisnaree in Dungannon, roamed through a group of “innocent people” outside Sense Nightclub “kicking and punching” in the early hours of July 28, 2013.

One man was knocked out and remained unconscious for several hours while another was punched from behind and blacked out as he hit the ground. A third man was kicked and punched as he tried to protect his unconscious friend by lying over him. Two others received blows and were injured.

Simanskis’ solicitor told the court that his client had deliberately left the country after being charged only to move back to Birmingham in 2014. There, he worked for two years until his detection and subsequent arrest.

“The report states that this was an unprovoked and vicious attack and that he shows limited insight and is devoid of any sense of remorse,” District Judge John Meehan commented.

“He floored them and left others to carry on kicking them. It is hard to understand how anyone gets any satisfaction... of going into an open area... and simply making his way through kicking and punching.

“This was breath-taking self-indulgence.

“That man will have this incident permanently imprinted on his mind. And in a car was his mother... what will be the impact of seeing you battering her son?

“You denied the core issues, had the case listed for trial, and then merely walked away.”

Judge Meehan then handed down jail sentences totalling nine months. He further imposed a sentence of three months for breach of bail which he ordered run consecutively to the first sentence.
