Japanese Popstar to judge songwriting talent

JAPANESE Popstar Gary Curran will take a break from his busy schedule playing festivals and gigs around Europe to judge a Londonderry competition offering a showcase for talented songwriters from the city.

The competition is organised by CALMS (Community Action for Locally Managing Stress) and follows on from previous incarnations, which boasted entrants such as Future Chaser, Furlo, The Dirty Words, The Q, and Our Krypton Son.

The CALMS Youth Forum “Move IT” of which Mr Curran is the patron is urging entries from all over Londonderry ahead of the final in the Nerve Centre on Thursday, September 16.

“The challenge provides the opportunity for all talented songwriters from different musical backgrounds to showcase their talent and the opportunity to compete with other young artists. The aim of the competition is to nurture new talents in all types of music, from rap and rock to pop and Jazz,” she continued.

“Many young people find music a medium that helps them to manage everyday stress as music can energise, invigorate, motivate and stimulate. How many of us listen to our IPODS while studying, working and relaxing?” she asked.

Aside from the kudos there is also a strong financial incentive for entrants. First prize is 500, runner up is 200 and third place is 100.

Entrance fee is 10 per application. If you think you have what it takes, record your song on a CD, complete an application form, enclosing a copy of the lyrics and entry fee, and post or leave in CALMS premises by the closing date.
