Jedward a hugehit as they rock Resource Centre

As many people in the town know, the Ballymoney Community Resource Centre’s (BCRC) Rock Group – The Causeway Crew - were visited by Jedward and a BBC film crew recently.

We had all been sworn to secrecy about the event until after Children in Need night on November 18, but we can now reveal the Rock School was being filmed for The One Show that was aired nationwide last week.

A spokesperson for BCRC told the Times: “We are very proud that the BCRC project was picked to represent Northern Ireland on the show. (For those of you who missed the item you can still view it on YouTube.)

“As you can imagine it was a huge event for the young people and a great opportunity to highlight their talent and the success of the rock school, which is growing from strength to strength.” Founder member, Alan McCandless, said of the visit:

“When Jedward came into the Resource Centre I nearly jumped out of my chair.

“The whole day was just really entertaining, I spent most of it laughing.

“Coming to the Rock School gives me the opportunity to do something I love with my friends.

“When I started this project I never imagined that it would be so successful, with so many members. I’m really looking forward to the future of the Causeway Crew.”

The Causeway Crew, is just one element of the Resource Centre’s Rocking the Causeway project, which is funded by BBC Children In Need.

It is managed and facilitated by staff at Ballymoney Community Resource Centre.

There are 23 members aged 9 – 26, several of whom are musicians while the rest of the group are vocalists.

The group brings together young people with and without disabilities and seeks to increase their skills, confidence and self esteem.

Our play list contains a mixture of genres and artists from Adele, Bon Jovi, Bruno Mars, Bryan Adams, The Undertones and Amy Winehouse.

We rehearse every other Saturday at BCRC and are very proud of the young people, staff, volunteers and parents/carers who dedicate this time and provide transport for the young people to get to and from these rehearsals.

We have to send a special great big thanks too, to Paul and Joel from the Ossia school of music who tutor the group, and also to Compass Advocacy Network, who provide us with lots of support and assistance.

Other recent events - The Causeway Crew performed an outdoor set at Castlecroft on Saturday 12 November as a fundraiser for Children In Need, and received high praise from everyone who was passing or who stopped to listen.

Thanks to all who went along and supported.

The spokesperson added: “We will be performing at The Evergreens Christmas celebration on Saturday 16 December and have other bookings coming in.

“It is hoped that we will soon be producing a CD which will go on sale and the funds will be put back into the Rock School.”
