John pounds the streets of New York

John, who is in his 50’s, ran alongside 50,000 runners and completed the marathon with a personal best time of 3:54.

The keen sportsman who is a member of City of Lisburn Athletic Club and a former player of Derriaghy Football Club and cricket club, took part in the New York Marathon to raise money for a cancer charity which is close to his heart.

John’s good friend Ronnie Hooke, sadly passed away from cancer, aged just 42 in March 2009. A year after he passed away, John took part in his first ever London Marathon in Ronnie’s name.

Since then John has raised money for cancer charities, as well as other charities close to his heart.

John flew off to America last week to the Big Apple. He was part of a group which headed off to New York City for a ‘marathon’ challenge in support of Action Cancer.

The Marathon ran through all five city boroughs (Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Manhattan), finishing up in the iconic Central Park. 
Runners were cheered on by an estimated two million spectators, with live bands and DJ’s along the way to create an electric atmosphere. The winners of the 45th New York Marathon were Kenya’s Stanley Biwott and Mary Keitany.

Action Cancer’s events assistant Stacey Graham said it is a once in a lifetime experience for the participants, “Action Cancer are delighted to have their support. The group have worked really hard on their training and their fundraising and we would like to wish them a fantastic trip.”

In total John has raised over £3,275 in sponsorship. This will go towards Action Cancer’s lifesaving services including: early detection breast screening services, the Big Bus mobile unit,
