Joyce snaps up a Coast Care Award

A PORTBALLINTRAE woman has snapped up a top award.

Last week, Joyce Ferder-Rankin was presented with an award by Environment Minister Edwin Poots at Stormont.

The Portballintrae woman’s photograph, of the coastline at Dunluce Castle, won ‘Photograph of the Year’ at the inaugural Coca Cola Coast Care Awards, managed by TIDY Northern Ireland.

Volunteers from across the Province were recognised for their dedication to cleaning up Northern Ireland’s shoreline.

Joyce’s photograph really impressed the Judges.

They felt that the use of light gave the photograph a very warm welcoming quality.

Each year registered Coast Care groups, representing nearly 1,000 individuals each volunteering an average of two hours, are lifting tonnes of dangerous, unsightly rubbish from our beaches.

Minister Poots said: “I would like to congratulate all of the volunteers and the award winners on their tremendous achievements – this is excellent!

“However, the volumes of waste collected highlights the necessity for every single person to take special care when discarding your rubbish.

“We are blessed with beautiful beaches in Northern Ireland for everyone to enjoy, but we must act responsibly not only when using our beaches but when discarding waste from our homes.”
