Joyriders went door to door beforetaking 4X4

Creeper joyriders went from door to door along a row of houses in the Culmore Road area before stealing a 4x4 and torching it on the nearby Glengalliagh Road.

Police in Londonderry are investigating reports of a number of incidents in the Talbot Park area on Tuesday, June 28.

Inspector Moore said: “It is believed that sometime overnight between Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June, unknown persons have worked their way along the street checking house and car doors. At least two vehicles were entered and items taken. A house was also entered with a set of car keys being taken and used to steal a silver coloured Nissan Qashqai parked outside. The car was reported abandoned and on fire at the side of Glengalliagh Road at 4.20am on Tuesday morning.

“I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the Talbot Park area on Monday night or Tuesday morning or in the Glengalliagh Road area at around 4am to contact police at Strand Road on 101 quoting reference 127 28/06/16. Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Inspector Moore continued: “I would ask people to always be mindful of home security and crime prevention. Always lock doors and make sure vehicles are secured when not in use. Garage, shed or outbuildings also need protection, particularly if they contain expensive items like lawnmowers or power tools.

“Fit strong, closed shackle padlocks and ensure that doors are solid enough not to be kicked in. Crime prevention advice is available from your local police station.”
