Jubilee Wood proposed

Carrickfergus Borough Council is seeking to create Northern Ireland’s only Diamond Jubilee Wood in the run up to next year’s royal celebrations.

The Woodland Trust initiative aims to create 60 woods, one for each year of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. The locations will feature in a commemorative booklet which will be presented to Her Majesty at the completion of the project.

Potential Diamond Wood sites are required to be around 60 acres, while planting will commence from autumn 2011 until the close of 2012.

The proposal came before councillors at the June meeting of the Parks, Countryside and Amenities subcommittee with a recommendation from Development Officer Stephen Daye that the local authority apply to be Northern Ireland’s only Diamond Wood.

A 60-acre site adjacent to the Bentra Golf Course, currently in conacre, was suggested as a potential location.
