Junction set to close in Larne for good

Plans were announced in February 1979 for the junction at Upper Cross Street and Pound Street to be closed permanently.

This move came despite protests that the junction was “not particularly dangerous” and should be opened. However, the council voted to close it.

Ald Tommy Seymour said: “It is a very dangerous junction to emerge from.”

Cllr Jim Martin suggested that the road could be opened as a one-way-street, with traffic entering from Pound Street. He said: “Traffic used that road for years when there were many more vehicles using Victoria Road from the harbour and there were no complaints.”

Ald Seymour’s proposal to close the street won by 10 votes to one. Cllr Martin voted against it.
