June 7 arrival for Olympic flame at Ballyronan

AS part of its 70-day UK-wide travels, the Olympic Flame will arrive in the Cookstown District on Thursday June 7 at Ballyronan Marina.

People will be able to welcome the Olympic Flame to the Marina at Ballyronan on the morning of June 7, with the Olympic Flame arriving from Antrim, across the Lough by boat at lunchtime at 1.12pm.

It will then move straight away by Torchbearer on to Ballyronan Harbour Road, the Shore Road and onto the B160, Ballyronan Road, at which time it will be put into a vehicle convoy and driven to Magherafelt.

Join schools from across the District to line the route at Ballyronan and participate in the sporting activities available like Tai Chi and Zumba. There will also be a radio roadshow and plenty of musical entertainment to enjoy from 12 noon on the day building up to the big moment when the torch will arrive across the Lough to the jetty.

The Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Flame include those that were successful through the public nomination processes run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.

LOCOG has endeavoured to slot all community Torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on. Each Torchbearer, includinging Mark Horton who works for the Ballinderry River Enhancement Association, will wear a white and gold uniform designed by adidas.

Chairman of Cookstown District Council said: “People will have a short window of opportunity to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay arriving and travelling through part of the Cookstown District.

“It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such an iconic symbol of the games and we would encourage people to welcome the Olympic Flame to our District. We are looking forward to welcoming the inspirational Torchbearers to our community.’

One of the Torchbearers for the Cookstown District is Karen Conn. Karen works as a Ward Sister in the Regional Intensive Care Unit (RICU), at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and is one of the ‘Unsung Heroes’ of the intensive care unit, working tirelessly for more than 20 years.
