Junior Lodge unfurling praised

MLA Doug Beattie also praised the “dignified way” the lodge has conducted itself since the determination.

A lodge spokesperson said, “The event was carried out in peace and with respect by the lodge accompanied by the band, Orange brethren and friends.

“Parkmount Junior Lodge wanted to carry out this ceremony on Saturday, May 7 with the same respect and dignity. However the parades commission took a political decision to prevent us from entering the Parkmount area.

“Parkmount Junior Lodge has been part of the Parkmount unionist community for over 50 years and we are proud of that association and will not allow bigots to break that bond.”

Newly elected UUP MLA Mr Beattie said the decision made little sense when the determination was made and makes little sense now.

He added, “Having previously written to the Parades Commission to outline the impact of their determination I remain fully supportive of Parkmount Junior Orange Lodge as they continue to maintain their connections with the Parkmount unionist community.”

The commission had placed restrictions on the event pointing to the Drumcree dispute. However, the lodge had argued that the unfurling had “nothing to do with Drumcree”.
