The centenary of the biggest naval engagement of World War One is being marked at The Braid with a Battle of Jutland commemorative exhibition.

The free display, which can be viewed until Saturday, June 10, provides an opportunity to remember the sailors from Mid & East Antrim who fought in that famous maritime battle.

Recent research has identified seven local men who lost their lives - Peter Kennedy from Ballymena; Carrickfergus men Bernard Chambers and Richard McMaw and Larne men Robert Gribben, Charles Love, William Moore and Hugh Sittlingham.

Eight local sailors who survived were Robert Cathcart, Alexander McIlwaine, Alexander McNeice, John Robinson and Charles Thompson from Ballymena; Samuel Bryson from Larne; and James Holmes and John McKendry from Carrickfergus.

Speaking as he officially opened the exhibition, Mayor Billy Ashe said: “This exhibition gives us an opportunity to remember the sailors from the Mid and East Antrim area who fought in what was the most significant sea battle of the First World War, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

“The small, panel-based exhibition explores the background and significance of this, the largest naval battle of the Great War and especially focuses on the stories of some of the local men from the area who served in the Royal Navy during this pivotal sea battle”.
