Keep safe this summer

The police are encouraging people to stay safe over the summer months and be vigilant on home security.

Newtownabbey Crime Prevention Officer Stuart Gibson said it was easy for people to forget to secure their properties and store valuables out of sight in the longer days.

He said: “We all want to get into that summer holiday mode and chill out, however, while our attitudes relax, we are often unwittingly presenting would-be thieves with golden opportunities to strike.

“Leaving doors and windows open or unlocked is one common way people can leave themselves vulnerable to thieves.

“Recent analysis has indicated that 77 per cent of creeper style burglaries in the Newtownabbey area occurred through an unlocked door.

“Establishing a routine that ensures you check your doors and windows before going to bed or leaving the house is one of the simplest steps you can take to protect your belongings.

He added: “Do not allow your home to look unoccupied while you are gone. Remember to cancel any deliveries such as milk or newspapers, arrange for a friend to collect your post or bring in your bin.

“Timer switches for lights or radios can also give a house a ‘lived in’ look.”

Police are encouraging neighbours to look out for each other and report suspicious activity to the police.
