Keep your home safe this summer

POLICE have issued a reminder to local householders to keep their homes safe this summer.

Crime Prevention Officer Stuart Gibson said: “Burglaries can increase at this time of year as people jet off on holiday leaving their homes vacant, however police have a simple message to everyone planning a holiday or leaving their home unoccupied - If It’s Valuable, Don’t Leave It Vulnerable.”

By following some simple steps, householders can reduce their chance of falling victim to burglars.

• Check all doors and windows are secure and locked.

• If you have a garage, put your car inside if you are not using it. Ensure it is locked and the keys are hidden from sight.

• If there are any bicycles or toys sitting around the outside of the house, put them away.

• If your bins are due to be emptied while you are away, ask a neighbour if they can put them out of sight.

• Make your house appear occupied by putting lights and/or a radio on timer switches.

• Set a burglar alarm if one is fitted to your home.
