Kelly wants to paint the town purple

UPPER Bann MLA Dolores Kelly wants to paint Lurgan purple.

She has praised Craigavon Borough Council’s application for Purple Flag Status and has urged everyone to get behind the campaign to achieve the coveted Purple Flag.

Purple Flag Status is an accreditation scheme that has already been successfully set up in many cities and towns. The Purple Flag is to town centres what the Blue Flag is to beaches - it gives people an idea of where to go for a good night’s entertainment by publicising the standard and quality of night life.

Mrs Kelly said: “I wrote to the council to ask them to apply for Purple Flag Status and am delighted to see that the application is going forward.

“We can all make a very real difference to our area by working together and supporting local businesses and our own towns as much as we humanly can. Purple Flag Status would be a great boost for our image, remind people of the quality of local night life and, hopefully, attract some more visitors.

“There is no doubt that local businesses are going through a very rough patch and they are to be congratulated for doing their best to keep things going. The council can do its part by pushing for Purple Flag Status and reminding everyone just how appealing our local area is. This is one flag that we all want to see flying.”
