In a hard-hitting message to teenagers and their parents, the PSNI said they had received an increasing number of complaints from schools, businesses and residents in the Carland Road, Oaks Road and White City areas in particular.

Police say they have visited the area around Drumcoo playing fields and the wooded area adjacent to it, and found evidence of “drinking and drug taking”, as well as lighting fires.

Inspector Keith Jamieson also warned: “Young people are reported to be swimming in the water at the brick works despite signs warning of the dangers”.

The local police chief said he has recently met with residents and elected representatives, adding: “A plan is being developed in order to tackle the problem”.

Measures will include enforcement as well as activities to divert young people away from anti-social behaviour.
