Kilwilkie estate graffiti clean up

A MAJOR clean up of the graffiti in the Kilwilkie estate took place last week.

Last Tuesday night the majority of the graffiti in the area was painted out by community workers helped by members of Sinn Fein.

It's understood those taking part in the clean up were subject to verbal abuse and threats by dissidents.

The 'MAIL' also received several messages to our text line mocking Sinn Fein for giving people a blank canvas to start again. It was further claimed members of the nationalist party were chased out of the estate.

A Sinn Fein spokesperson said the party members were only there to support community activists who work and live in the area.

Commenting on the murals, the spokesperson said: "The walls were covered in unsightly scribblings and scrawls - like something done by a drunk on a Saturday night. If someone wants to put up a new mural we'd hope it would be something that's presentable. It maybe isn't what everyone wants but the important thing is for it to look presentable."

It's understood the community workers consulted with the Duffy family before painting over the POWs mural.
