Kinghan is a Shaw bet in Galgorm Castle competition

THE Shaw Automation sponsored Stableford was held at Galgorm Castle Golf Club and at halfway five handicapper Colin Steel led Colin Kinghan (2), Peter Fieldhouse (16) and Keith Barkley (7) by two points.

Through 12, Steel was joined by Kinghan, followed by Barkley three points adrift and Fieldhouse falling back (‘ding’ at 11) another point behind.

Steel ‘dinged’ 13 and found himself two points down to Kinghan after 15. Fieldhouse had recovered (birdie at 13) and was only one point down with Barkley level with Steel.

Barkley (three pars), Steel (par, birdie, par) and Fieldhouse (two bogeys, par) finished level but they were unable to hold off Kinghan who finished par, birdie, par for overall victory by one point from runner-up Fieldhouse (better back nine).

Barkley, with a better back nine, took the honours in Division 1 with Steel second. The race for third place was between Peter Houston (10) who led Adrian McCart (9) by four points at halfway with Jordan Hood (4) another point behind.

Houston held his advantage until the 16th which he bogeyed and was joined by McCart, two points ahead of Hood. McCart (bogey, par) and Houston (par, bogey) finished level and were joined by Hood who had two birdies and with a better back nine claimed third place.

In Division 2 at the turn Ossie Smyth (14) was in the lead with Derek McAuley (14), Roy Bell (13) and Alan Coulter (14) at one point

intervals respectively behind.

Four holes further on and Bell and Coulter were disputing the lead with Smyth chasing one point behind and McAuley another point away.

With one hole to play all four players were level and all to play for. Coulter and McAuley ruled themselves out when they failed to score, leaving Smyth and Bell for the first two placings.

Bell parred the last as did Smyth to finish level but with a better back nine Bell claimed first place. Coulter and McAuley also finished together two points behind and with a better back nine Coulter took third place.

At the halfway point in Division 3 Derek McPeake (18) held a two point advantage over David Caves (21) with Stephen Neeson (21) and Ian Stewart (18) another point down. Through 13 Neeson had taken a one point lead thanks to a run of four three pointers.

McPeake who was in the lead was one point behind (double bogey on ten) with Caves another two points away (double bogey on ten) followed by Stewart (double bogey on 11) a further point down.

After 16 it appeared to be a dual between McPeake and Neeson who were three points ahead of Caves with Stewart another point behind. Neeson finished with a ‘ding’ par but McPeake was unable to capitalise on this as he double bogeyed the last two holes to leave Neeson in first place one point ahead.

Stewart (two bogeys) and Caves (bogey, double bogey) finished together but with a better back nine Stewart took third place.

David Kernohan (+2) won the gross. His round contained an eagle three at the par five Fort, eight birdies and seven pars.

The Seniors prize went to David Martin (11)
