Knighthood call for Munich hero Gregg

A GRANDSON of legend Harry Gregg has set up an online campaign to have his grandfather knighted.

Gregg, who lives in Castlerock, was deemed a hero in the carnage that followed the horrific Munich air crash in 1958.

A plane carrying the Manchester United squad returning from a European Cup tie in Yugoslavia crashed on its third attempt to take off in atrocious weather conditions, killing 23 of the 44 passengers on board.

Despite coming to the aid of teammates, Gregg, 77, is most remembered for going back into the burning inferno to rescue a pregnant woman and her young daughter.

While having already been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1995 and also recognised in the acclaimed Pride of Britain awards, Gregg should now be referred to as “Sir”, according to his grandson, Danny Woodvine, pictured above with Harry.

In a campaign entitled, Sir Harry Gregg? A True Hero! on popular social networking website, Facebook, the 24-year-old has instigated a large number of tributes and support for the 1958 World Cup hero.

Danny said: “I’m just looking for people’s support, I’ve read through this forum and many others are asking the question, why has Harry not been knighted?

“I looked to do something about that. Wouldn’t it be great if I could show a huge backing? A bit biased I know, but I am a proud grandson,” he added.

And Harry is surprised by the campaign, saying he knew nothing about it.

“I’m blushing even thinking about it.

“If life was all about what I did at Munich, I wouldn’t be very proud of what I’ve achieved.

“That was something that was done on the spur of the moment.I would like to think I’ve done something in sport.”
